Directly above the play dates and meetings, the matches and greetings,
floats the ever changing theatrical splendor of water and ice upon dust.
Dare I say all of us have at one time been constantly captivated
by these endless acts of atmospheric stage?
I must say for better or worse I have yet to lose my
fascination with the cast of
         grey monsters, pewter butterflies-
objects to push and pull into the confines of my imagination -
or sit back, let go, chin arched-play dates, matches and meetings aside -
and watch with eager anticipation.

Whip it Rock it Fro it Chop it

Source
Not since the days of the fistest black afro pick has the concept of going natural been so widespread. Of course everything is relative. I mentioned "natural hair" to a friend today and found it a bit humorous as I tried to explain the paradigm shift that has allowed more and more african american women to embrace their God-given coils and curls, just as they arrive, with both arms, a willing spirit, a search engine, detangler and an arsenal of bobby pins. I jest now but when I coupled growing out my natural hair with morning runs before work, I quickly realized why they call it a "journey". A journey it has been. And while there are many variations of a few reasons to grow and live with yourself without alterations, for me I think the biggest is just to be able to firmly tell myself "you can fry it, die it, cut it and buy it - but just know: you're perfect just the way you are".

If you are natural, contemplating a transition, wanting a big chop or just want to come see what all the new vocabulary is all about, come out to the Carolina Natural Hair Expo in Columbia SC on Saturday October 29th 10am-4pm - Advance Tix are 5 bucks - you can get those here -- I will be shooting the event and selling my photog wares including some new images from my recent trip to Aruba! Hope to see you there! - toj

I got a feelin

Exactly what is it about the coming of fall that creates a ch-ch-chill up my spine?  ummmm the chill up my spine perhaps.?. nooo it's not that cool in the south yet. I just left caribbean waters and am back on dry - very dry - land. But now I've gone back to an added little chill in the air. Just enough to be totally refreshing and exciting. Maybe it's just me. Maybe it's just memories of daddy taking us to the fair or ma wearing her infamous cookie-monster rope. The smell of a sweet potato baking in the oven as I looked for the missing foot to my beloved fuzzy socks. The promise of hot chocolate with extra marshmallows. Oh, I know it's not even close to being that cold but the first little chill in the air reminds me of chilly times gone by. I hope my nieces and nephews have bright colored robes of their own and look for their fuzzy socks and curl up in from of the tv at night with a cup of hot cocoa. It's just one of those things you gotta do. Like bubble baths and roasting marshmallows. Like having someone to scratch your back or comb your hair until their arm gets tired. You certainly can live without them but life's so much sweeter when you don't.

To all the little kids with no mommy or daddy - I hope one day you get your fuzzy socks, hot chocolate, trips to the fair and someone to embarrass you with a cookie monster robe.

    Fashion Week 2011..12..11

So yes the time is upon us to think of all seasons simultaneously!!  Baseball, Football ... tennis! (tennis is pretty rockin' right now)

But no - those are not the season to which I refer good fellow - it's the last month of barbecues and summer beach trips, upcoming fall fashions already fighting for floor space at the mall and YEP - New York Fashion Week - Spring 2012!!

I honestly haven't caught much of it (these things called work, chores and basic cable are constantly cramping my style!) but I did drop into the New York Times to check out Vera Wang's offerings to the gods of excess ... unfortunately ... the collection wasn't to my liking ... MY liking ... I'm sure there are a vast multitude who have and will be fawning over it and it's mainstream offspring for months to come ...

Here are a few samples ...

Sometimes the only thing that makes it to Main Street are the colors. I am looking forward to those. .. pencil skirt in that yellow, button-down silk blouse in its print ... totally

    Wrong Tax Bracket

Yes, I'll say it again. I was born in the wrong tax bracket. I wish someone would do the humanitian thing and rectify the situation. How can you sleep at night while I'm living in what might as well be poverty?!?

Okay I know that's just totally out of line. Okay, maybe not totally. There are worse things to say. But when I want to go shopping it's terribly clear that I don't have the right kind of money in the bank. This is what I want today. Thank goodness for pretend shopping. These are both from Donna Karan's fall line. Yummmm-oooo

    Oh No She Didn't

Have you ever had a moment, after a short (or long) span of the woe-is-me's, when you got gently smacked in the back of the head - back to the realization of how blessed you are?  I know you have. Who hasn't? Well I'm sporting a furrowed-brow smirk smile right now because I've just had a moment like that.  In a moment when my review of an upcoming work presentation is on a continuous loop; I'm hating that I missed an opportunity to work out today like it was the day the weight loss fairy was making a Gold's Gym guest appearance; I'm tiring of all the distant drips my symphony of a house has to office and I reluctantly postponed this week's small dinner party with friends; I got my little nudge of a smack down while chomping on some Publix lemon-pepper chicken, mixed greens with raisins and candied pecans fighting for equal time with the Penfold's Chardonnay. Cut to the smack of a nudge

Two weeks ago Anna Stoessinger had her stomach removed. She's two years my senior. Two years my senior and a newly married foodie who loves her biological family and that which came by choice. She's eaten a lot better than I in the time we've had on this earth but she, like me, has a deep connection with food, linking memories and smiles, great trips and satisfied exhalations with the wonderful gift of cuisine. She blessed me with her story via the New York Times and I thank her for it. She spoke of trips with her mother where they became kindred spirits, comrades in their quest for escape through food. She conveyed the close bond she'd formed with her husband and the cherished backdrop food had been in their journey together. She painted a perfectly vivid picture of years spent with food a cherished companion. I'm certain her story also struck me because she was battling the very disease that snatched my maternal grandmother's life with what seemed to me little warning. But Anna was armed to fight. She's lost the battle in losing her stomach but was poised to win the war. She spoke of her journey to her last meal and personally I'd like to know every single thing she ate along the way in explicit detail. Who better to get food recommendations from than a foodie who's eating their way to their last heaping spoonful?  Anna also made clear that she knows she's extremely fortunate. Faced with the eventuality of my grandmother was undoubtedly the biggest threat of her whole experience. I'm happy for her that she was able to face that adversary with the weapons early detection and modern medicine.

How hard it can be to live like we're dying or like something or someone will be taken from us at any moment. We certainly know it to be true. I don't think even little ones and teenagers feel truly invincible anymore.  All I know is every time I'm introduced to someone like Anna or someone who is not blessed with a renewed chance at life puts me back on track, gives me that gentle smack on the back of the head, reminds me that I'm unarguably blessed beyond my measure and I should take that furrowed-brow half smile for all it's worth.

Side note: Anna Stoessinger's last meal with her stomach was eaten at Le Bernardin in Manhattan. Their site is currently closed for restoration and their taking reservations for September.

Read her words for yourself in The New York Times. And when you're done, think of a last meal and set a date in the near future to go out and get it. While you're at it, plan to look nice. It's good for you.

There is no point in going to them if one intends to keep one’s belt buckled.” - Frederic Raphael

    All Things Considered

You know what I love? National Public Radio. Now most people who know me well already know that fun fact but I'm feeling particularly fond it this evening. Trust me when I tell you you really should give it a try if you're not already a fan. Or should I say if you THINK you're not a fan. Every time I click that button that lands on Public Radio I just wait with eager anticipation of what I'll learn next. These are not mindless stories that pretend to be headline news. The ones we've heard so many times  that we begin to believe that they're actual of serious concern or at the very least mildly informative. The foolish drivel that no doubt kills my brain cells and lowers the IQ of my grandchildren not yet conceived.

I'm talking about the meaty, thoughtfully prepared pieces that provoke me to ponder, to wonder, to marvel, to THINK. The stories that lead me down paths and introduce me to people I otherwise would not know. People I might have otherwise looked upon with nonchalance or skepticism had I had an opportunity to look upon their faces before they spoke. Public Radio asks those questions I might ask if my world was quiet enough for me to think about point A, point B and many many points in between. And then it follows up that question with meaningful information. Imagine that. I know I know - there are other sources of information and thousands of books at my local library. But I guess that's part of the appeal of public radio to me. That wet, full, healthful well of information, point-of-view and personal experience after personal experience is right there at my finger tips every day - and it's free. Free I say!  I would say amazing but I really try to hold on to that one for something truly mindbogglingly. Like the universe.

Public Radio is pretty awesome though. Probably an equally overused word but hey I've got to give it something better than "neat".

Give it a try - say maybe the show "This American Life" (from Public Radio Interntional via National Public Radio to us) Try to idle your attention span for just a bit, find a quiet spot (the car will do - it's kinda like holding yourself hostage) and check out Public Radio. If you become addicted - have no fear. The radio is our last free meal ... give or take a donation or two.

    What's that?? - Silence ...

Seriously. All I hear right now is the quick clattering of these keys which is no actual measure of how well I type and the rumble of passing cars. My nephews are either still asleep or quiety plotting world domination somewhere in the house. Amazingly I can not hear any faucet drips, run away tiolets or the not-so-faint scurry of the animal who's taken up residence in my attic. It's a beautiful thang.

After a couple crasy busy months of company and a new job I've got a week with my youngest nephews - 10 and 14. They're great. So funny. The 14-year-old School of the Arts theater major told me yesterday he hates English accents. Not American. England English. If you're reading this you likey know that I have been enamered with English accents for quite some time. I'm thinking in one right now. They are just the coolest. Come on! Everybody loves English accents! You  know you do! Dont believe me?... Check it out ...

Okay so I know that's a cheap shot since Corrine's one of the coolest people earthwide. lol ... oh well -- you know you love the accent ... back to America ... ... So Saturday my sister Nay and I shot our first official weddinging. FIRST! All went well. It was busy but not crazy. It was simple and bright and beautiful and we're happy with the images we captured. This week my nephews and I are enjoying a stay-cation together. Yesterday we stumbled upon a group of men and boys racing remote controlled cars in the corner of a shopping center. I should have had my camera and I didn't. I won't make that mistake again :).  Those cars were not cheap! Some run on gas!! A couple of them had a Tokyo drift. I kid you not!! Perhaps I'm the last to know :) ... The boys and I also found this REALLY cool Monopoly game. It has properties all over the world, a debit card machine, the utitilities are wind and solar!!  The game has auctions and mortgages and hotels and houses from around the world!! Prre-tty cool!! The 14-year-old and I have left our game in limbo --- I'll get you next time gadget ... NEXT TIME!!! He's kicking my butt.

Okay seriously, time for breakfast ...hmmmmmm

and joining of two of the best.
I had a blast and managed to steal a few images too.

Oh my goodness you guys. It's been ridiculously too long. With a new workout schedule, a new job, transitioning to mywearing my natural instead of relaxed hair (which i think i'm doing an ok job at - we shall see) and a couple simultaneous photog projects I've just been too --- well scratch that --- I just haven't made the time to write.

Recently I agreed to house-sit for some friends on the outskirts of town. Just far enough from my humble abode, the familiar sounds of the neighborhood and every day suburbia to provide a serene escape. Somewhere between me watering the vegetable garden and the night sky losing its baseball field competion I found the advantages to abandoning the structured, incorporated, by-lawed, perfectly gridded, sod-clad tuffs of earth we've ritually claimed as our own little piece of the planet for generation after generation. Imagining that all of our fences are just as good as picketed and our neighbors would certainly bring over a bundt cake if wereally needed cheering up. I think Christopher Robin would have loved it out there. It certainly seemed like a 100-acre wood.

I managed to capture a few images while out on the land. I was supposed to be working on a challenge from a popular photography site. Everyone was to try to capture something unique and exceptional at a 1000 shtutter speed. While I managed to catch some pretty cool images I shot them at 1600 instead of 1000 so I didn't feel qualified to submit them for judging. The shots I got really did do a good job of capturing the feeling of an enchanted forest that I'd been feeling for the week.

Why is it that my photos of food end up looking better than my photos of people?
Oh well ... I guess beauty's in the eye of the beholder ;)

    Like The Wind

It's no surprise that I think of my life as a busines, relationships as limited liability corporations, old friends as former allies in dissolved conglomerates. My life in general does the same thing. A family meeting agenda is more expected that a rousing game of spades. Special family projects come with donation commitments and deadlines. Chain emails more often debate the health benefits of the next family dinner menu as opposed to being a platform for everyone's attempt at stand-up. All that said, it's no suprise to me that my family has a monthly newsletter. I made my first offering this month and thought I would share it with you. I've really taken to running and thought my family would appreciate hearing a bit about it ...

    Like the Wind

In years past I often gazed upon a sneaker-clad sidewalk warrior enviously. Runners. They always seemed to be so free yet conquering a formidable opponent with every hit of the pavement. Wind in their hair, arms and legs stretching forward as if to pull the future to them instead of racing to meet it. They look so free. So extremely free. As they leave their sweat and cares in the porous concrete behind, they simultaneously shatter the milestones they've left on many mornings before.

I'm not quite sure what moon I was under when I realized it was time to get out there and experience one of the things I've long wanted to do but 2010 was the Year Of The Sneaker. My job was sponsoring a team to run in the Governor's Cup in Columbia, South Carolina. Some chose to walk, others to run the the 8K, still others the half marathon. One wild hair and a couple suggestions later ended in a yes for me joined the team as an 8K runner. As I signed my life away I wondered what exactly was possessing me to commit to something I'd never tried before in my life. I mean, I've run to a sale, I've run to a meal, I've run to many a thing but I hadn't run to a finish line since middle school field days and those were such a distant memory I really couldn't tell you how well I faired back them. I'm assuming those green ribbons I have in a shoe box meant I did something more than just step onto the grassy knoll and watch others cross the finish line in the three-legged race.

I must admit, I showed a lot of heart training for that first race. I bought the right shoes, bought the right clothes. I even bought an on-line trainer that I did not use once. Not once. Notwithstanding the wasted cyberspace purchase, I trained throughout the week for two months, took advantage of the encouragement and pushing of my friends and began to experience a great deal of relief when I could feel myself getting stronger and faster – being able to run a mile, then two, then five – without revisiting and bidding farewell to my last meal. When the crisp cold day of that first race arrived I was armed with gloves, earmuffs, Gatorade gel, a new Adidas jacket and a first day of school nervous energy that would propel me to accomplishing something I'd wanted to for a long time. I also had some surprise supporters that rounded my happiness and satisfaction with the day off quite nicely.

I did good in that first race, finishing in a little under an hour. I've run several since then; running about an 11 minute mile in each. Each time I walk to the starting line that nervous first day of school energy still wells up within me and with each stride after that signal to start, I move closer to my goal of being faster, stronger, healthier and happier than I was the year, day and moment before. Some think I must be a little left of center to be running in “all these runs”. Others think it's time for me to take on more challenging ones. I've always managed to be Malcolm in the Middle so I'm okay with the reviews. As long as I'm striving to be better than I was in the moments gone by, I'm alright with me.

I know you likely know this but I'll say it anyway: If you've been wanting to give something a try – whether it's scaling a mountain or writing a poem – take that first step. See the mountain up close. Buy the pencil and paper. Set goals and you'll surprise yourself with what you can accomplish.

    Robert Mills House
While she may not be as well known or seen as refined as her sister, Columbia, South Carolina is worth the effort you take to get to know her. Her beauty, artistic nature and eclectic culinary offerings make her just as worthy a companion as any other. She doesn't brag or always tell you about her next adventure so you may have to do a little investigating of your own.

Now that we're after the frost but before the fire, maybe Historic Columbia Foundation's Friday Happy Hour Tours would be just the right spring outing for you and this fair town.

    Hi.

I haven't forgotten you. I hope you haven't forgotten me. I've been crazy busy lately and neglecting this space but I'll do better so do keep wandering back. I've been shooting a lot lately and hopefully getting better. I'm definitely getting better at interacting with subjects that have - well veins and blood and brains. But it's been really good .. I'll get you guys some of those but in the meantime, here's one that I like from a recent wander ...

    It's A Family Affair

Making my way through the crowd of familar and not-so-familiar faces,
    I scale the family tree.
Why is it that loss always brings us together
    faster than anything else could?
    We have the same eyes.
    She has my sister's smile.
I swear my grandmother sits in the corner 40 years younger.
He came from over seas - she from up north.
    They're coming on the train.
    They're flying in tomorrow.
We'll cry and eat and laugh and plan
All to be together - with the family - once again.

    Tasty Bites

Nearing the end of a great weekend in Georgia, I had great meal - succulent beef empanadas, sweet fried plantains and a to-die-for dream of a drink .. the Sangria Margarita ... there was so much to choose from and I just knew I would be happy with whatever I got. I eered on the side of moderation and went with the small bites ...

I will be recreating this sooner rather than later ... the drink sooner than soon ... yummm-ooooh! The picture does NOT do it justice ... I should have taken that thing outside for its close-up ...

Next time you're in or near Duluth, Georgia check out Armando's Caribe ... I highly doubt you'll be disappointed ...

    Stretching forth. Beckoning the sun.
Simultaneously reaching - anchoring down into black, rich, nutrience.
Awakening from elongated slumber, growing stronger with every slow and deliberate inhale.
Sloughing away the darkness - soaking in the light.
Grow. Grow firm yet flexible. Be strong.

    Spring has sprung.

    Hello Daaling

So you know the feeling when a good week goes by so fast that it feels like only a couple days? or when a bad week draaaaags on so long that it feels like your entire pimply seventh grade year? Well this past seven days for me were a great, relaxing, meandering vacation despite the fact that I actually got a ton done this week. Someone between a nap and another nap I managed to take advantage of a last-minute invitation to see Prince, shoot photos at several locations with my new lens (yeesssssssss), yard work (uummm yah?) and a dozen other things that are all now a blur. Here are a few visual higlights from the concert. These were taken by a friend of a friend. Prince was all I'd hoped he'd be. His talent, energy and warmth came across super concentrated. He couldn't possibly play as long as we wanted him to. We could have screamed, sang and danced all night.

    Get Real

Tonight in the actor's studio, Bradley Cooper spoke to a captivated audience that included first and second year actors about the joys and challenges of being an actor. He caught my contemplative fancy when he spoke about endeavouring to be authentic -  not to act but to be ... authentic. I'm not sure if that concept is flowery or stripped down. As I think about it, it makes me squint and look to the side in my "wait, I'm thinking" sort of way and hover over that thought for a minute. Being authentic. He's trying to be sincere and genuine in the most fabricated of moments. Cameras, and people and cubicles of space feigning reality.

I hope I invest just as much energy into to being authentic and genuine and sincere in my day-to-day existence. Sometimes we can be dolls and action figures restricted to the Matell box of purchase. Put on a shelf and protected from the elements. From jelly coated fingers of ridicule and hard plastic scissors of criticism. After all we'll be worth something some day. To someone. Somewhere. Maybe.

I don't know about you but I'd rather get that permanent haircut and the Sharpie tattoo. Beats the high shelf any day. I want to be authentic too. And hopefully the audiences will approve.

I realize I should be ticketed for mixing metaphors so shamelessly but that's what was on my mind. Blame it on being authentic ;)

Strike a Pose There's Nothin to It

Tonight I had the pleasure of joining The Contemporaries for Photography 101. Photographer Pat Wright, of Pat Wright Photography graciously agreed to lead us through the Who Shot Rock and Roll exhibit through the perspective of the photographer's lens. It was an exciting perspective especially for someone like me who who love to one day shoot a museum-worthy shot. I look forward to maybe going on one of his photo safaris in the near future. Life has such fluid moments. I want to freeze as many as possible for posterity-for two seconds from now!

On another note there's so much going on in my little zone this weekend. If you know me well, you know I love the idea of being being able to enjoy a few cities without much effort - Columbia, SC - Charleston, SC - Atlanta, GA and Charlotte, NC ... I really hope to one day add Greenville,SC. It's SUCH a nice place! I just never go there ...

Okay so a couple things going on this weekend ...

    Queen City - Charlotte, NC

This weekend the NCII (N C Double I) will , as I understand it, converge upon the Queen City with an unignorable force. This year is the 65th annual Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Basketball Tournament. It started on Feb 28th but if you're in the 704 and you don't know it's there now I'm sure you'll know tomorrow. If I were going to be there I'd be finding the hotel that's hosting Doug E Fresh, Bizmarkie and Nicki Minaj...

The Holy City - Charleston, SC

Tomorrow starts the first night of the BB&T Food and Wine Festival in Charleston! So much to eat so little time! Top Chef Challenges ... Sip & Stroll ... Tasting Tents ... so so much ...

Those are a couple options for the weekend  - both are sure to be a blast! Of course it's just the middle of the week so enjoy the rest of it! Don't wait for the weekend to have a good time!

    Happy Hour Homeroom

If only there was happy hour in highschool; I might have done much better.  But no fear; now that we're adults it's not too late to learn a little something while taking back a cold one and a whole lot more ...

The Columbia Museum of Art is now hosting a drink-and-learn on First Fridays  (that's my term, not theirs)...and no, I'm not an alcoholic... but I just may get hooked on these First Fridays ... I suggest you definitely check it out while the Who Shot Rock and Roll exhibit is still at the museum. It's a great exhibit - but then I'm partial to both photography and rock and roll ... Here's the info:

    03/04/11
    Doors open at 7:00 p.m. / Performance begins at 8:00 p.m.
Arts & Draughts is a new series designed to be an interactive party on the first Friday of every month at the Museum.

At the March Arts & Draughts the Columbia Design League will present a special lecture and Q&A session with SVP for On-Air Design and Off-Air Creative, MTV and MTV2, Jeffrey Keyton at 7:15 p.m. Keyton oversees the award-winning design teams at MTV and has been instrumental in defining MTV’s distinctive visual personality for the last 20 years.

Guests also take a unique perspective tour of Who Shot Rock & Roll with Free Times music editor Patrick Wall, indulge in a beer tasting from America’s first micro-brewery, Widmer Brothers Brewery Company, view featured works by Devine Street Tattoo artists and rock out at 8:00 p.m. to performances by Mo' Betta Soul Sounds Familiar Records Showcase featuring Dayclean, Fayth Hope and Preach Jacobs. And while you’re here, create your own mini canvas and watch a live painting by artist Thomas Crouch.

Brought to you by Inspired Communities.
Sponsored by The Whig, Free Times and Earth Fare.
Cost: $7 / $5 for members/ Free for joining or renewing at the event.

    Swell Bites

If you ever drive through upstate South Carolina, be sure to follow the signs to The Beacon. That is if you're not keen enough to follow your nose. The Beacon is a culinary marker that would rightly sit in the top half of a list of ledendary South Carolinian Diners Drive-Ins and Dives.
I became aqainted with this particular monument to Americana last April when support for a grieving friend took me to the Greenville-Spartanburg area. It was again greiving that brought the experience to mind earier this month after the passing away of The Beacon's founder, John B. White, Sr.  Mr. White opened The Beacon Drive-In in 1946 and ran it until his retirement in 1998.

The Beacon serves up their brand of Happy Days from 6:30am to 10pm Monday through Saturday at 255 John B. White Sr. Boulevard Spartanburg, SC 29306. When you feed the people good food for generations, they have have no choice but to rename the street after you - your name is the first that comes to mind! Next time you're in the upstate and you're willing to take a break from worrying about your waistine, check it out!! I know I will! In the meantime, we have these yummy reminders of my first meal there to motivate those extra crunches - I mean we do work out to eat well, don't we??!?

Oh and by the way, The Beacon hasn't escaped Guy Fieri's notice - he knows aaaaall about it ... check it out! (do I say that a lot?)

    You Betta Work

Okay, did you know that Rupaul has a show that's like America's Next Top Model for drag queens? Whoa! We have totally run out of ideas. That was the side note ... the main note is that I went to the Edventure fashion show girl's night out fundraiser tonight. It's a good day when you can work, do happy hour, do a girl's night and make it into bed by 10pm. Seriously that's a fast-track night! A few photos from the evening ...

    Spring's A Comin

It's getting REALLY nice out there! I'm excited! There's a crispness in the air and a nice soft breeze. Nice night for a walk. Well maybe a nice night to run errands at Wal-Mart. I don't take walks at night. The clouds in the night sky give the evening a little edge. Without a decent tri-pod I couldn't get a great picture but that didn't stop me from trying ...

    The February Night Sky ...

I like the painted qualtiy of this one ...

    do you see the face?

    Take a Memo

I've been sick in bed for days now. Feels like weeks but I am feeling a lot better. I so want to go out, get pretty and get lunch. Salmon and capers in a light cream sauce over some odd shaped pasta with a glass of chardonnay. In the meantime, I'll settle for some fashion finds: one thing that never seems to die - not that I want it to - cork ...

This would be nice with a light salmon sheath and some gold bangles...
Amanda Pearl's "Tess" Clutch for $198

With a pair of calf length khakis or chamos and a tank ...
Tory Burch's Snake Printed "Jeanine" Wedge - $325
And something for the home.... preeeetty ...
Rectangle Cork Lamp from Inmod - $145
